The possible reasons why Mac screen goes black could be listed as follows:
- Battery Drain
Running out of battery is one of the most common reasons why your Mac screen goes blank. Even if your Mac is plugged in, a bad battery or a faulty cable can stop your Mac from charging and thus the Mac shows a black screen and becomes unresponsive. So the first thing you should do is to check Mac’s battery and charging cables.
- Display Issue

Method 1: Test Mac’s Battery

You could check things as follow:
- Check for the charger cable. Is it still connected and undamaged?
- Check for the indicator light. Is it still on?
- Check if there is a noise from Mac’s fans or the drive.
So, after performing all the checks, if you find out that indicator light is off and there is no noise, you should check for the battery. Because this happens only when the Mac runs out of battery. Immediately keep your Mac plugged in and charge the device. When the Mac can boots up normally, check for the battery replacement of if necessary.
Follow the steps below to perform this check
- Go to Apple Menu on the top left.
- Search for About this Mac>System Report>Power.
- Check for these items: cycle count and condition for your battery. If the condition is bad or poor, it is suggestible to purchase a new battery.

Method 2: Restart Your Mac
Whatever the operating system is, or whatever the computer is, restarting the devices helps in fixing the issues. If this doesn’t fix, then try restarting the MacBook.
Here are the three options you can use to fix the problems.
OPTION 1: Long press Power button for 5 to 6 seconds, and then wait for 15 seconds till Mac is shut down. Then, press the power button again.
OPTION 2: Press Control + Eject keys. If a dialog box shows, press Enter to shut down your Mac. Then, press the power button to restart it.

Using the third method, you can get your Mac out of the black screen completely. This is what you need to do:
STEP 1: When you press the power button one, you will see an option to shut down. But when the screen is black, you can’t see that option.
STEP 2: Now that you have pressed the power button, now press the S Key. This puts the Mac to sleep. After that, long press the power button for 6 seconds exactly! No need to press more that.
STEP 3: Now wait for 15 seconds and then press the power button to restart it. This is where the Mac screen will light up and start up normally.

Method 4: Reset the NVRAM/PRAM
Even after trying the above methods the Mac is still unresponsive and shows a black screen, or the MacBook Pro/Air screen goes black intermittently, you have to reset the NVRAM/PRAM. This might work.
STEP 1: In the first step, hold the power button for 6 seconds to shut down your Mac.
STEP 2: Now hold on to the power button. And then, press Command+Option+P+R
STEP 3: Now release the keys if you see Apple logo screen or can hear the other options like startup chimes.
Method 5: Disable Suspicious Login Items
There is a problem with the Mac apps. Even the Mac users might have noticed them. Some apps launch automatically without users consent. MacMaster is a tool that helps in identifying such apps. STEP-1: First of all, download and install MadMaster on your computer
STEP-2: After installing, go to the extensions option on the left and then click on the Scan option to scan all the installed extensions on the Mac.
STEP-3: When the scanning is done, you have to choose the login option and then find the apps that start at login without your permission.
STEP-4: There will be a circle button in the app. Notice it. If the circle is grey in colour, then, it means, the app is successfully disabled.
Method 6: Reinstall the macOS
This is the final try for you if the above 5 methods did not work to fix the black macbook pro screen! Also, you should opt to this method if you are suspecting software issues. For this, you need to update all the apps to the latest versions including the macOS.
